In the mid 80's amidst all the Transformers and G.I. Joe's (and reruns of the 60's version of Spiderman) a brand new animated series came out called "Robotech". The story line, in and of itself wasn't original. Boy meets Girl, aliens attack the world, boy gets involved in a love triangle, etc. etc. What set it apart from all the other TV shows and movies out there, was the action. Centered around an alien vessel the SDF-1 and the cool Veritech fighters, that looked like F-14 Tomcats that could convert into giant walking robots. This new style of cartoon, which some called anime, others called japanimation or japanime, brought a realism into the world of animation that was unfathomable.

The minor details that the animators put into each episode, from the phone booths and restaurants, to the technical aspects of the ships were mind blowing. This level of commitment to a process was completely foreign (no pun intended) to the animation community that hadn't experienced the Japanese "cartoon" way. Most of us in America were used to the bad animation that came after the Warner Bros. "Bugs Bunny" classics that still ran, which in itself were technical achievements when it came to the small details. But, Hollywood didn't want to spend the money on the talent to continue putting out quality cartoons. They, most likely, considered it a waste of time to pander to children, unless it was to sell them crappy food, toys, or clothes.

To say that Robotech changed the landscape of animation on television, would be irresponsible. There were others - Speed Racer, Captain Harlock, Star Blazers. But Robotech was right place, right time. With G.I. Joe and Transformers (plus Thundercats and SilverHawks coming down the pipeline, at that point), Harmony Gold was in place to take the world by storm.

Background on Macross
Macross was created by Shoji Kawamori and Studio Nue in 1982, telling a story of fictional Earth after the year 1999. An technically advaned alien vessel crashes on South Ataria island and over the course of 10 years, human scientists and military strategists, converge on the large vessel, reverse engineering the ship and creating something called "overtechnology", which were scientific advances discovered, after the scientists started to research the ship and it's tech.

In the original story, the world was at war. When the ship crashed, peace was brokered and a world council was created, believing that a bigger threat to the world was coming. Since many believed that an international government would be the best course of action, several nations rebelled against the idea and the U.N. Wars started, ultimately the countries that fought for their independence, lost the fight and the U.N. Spacy council was created.

Macross Island
In the "Macross" series, the island, South Ataria, was located on a fictional island in the Pacific Ocean. At the far end of the Ogasawara Island Chain, where the ship sat for 10 years, before being reengineered for humans. The island became a bustling small city for the people that worked on the ship and their families, another island MacMartin Island, a close neighbor, was the site of a United Earth military installation and responsible for the production of the Veritech fighters and the pilots that manned them. Ten years after the crash, an alien fleet, the Zentradi, appeared above Earth, attacking the island and attempting to retake the SDF-1.
During the fight, the SDF-1 attempted to jump to space, using their space fold technology, which the entire island and a parts of the ocean were encapsulated in the hyperspace fold and was transported into space, near Pluto, with the ship.

When the island disappeared, the government declared the entire population to be dead and covered up the mistake by blaming the Anit-Unification League for the destruction of the island, to keep the existance of the Zentradi alien race a secret.

If you're looking to visit the real world equivalent of Macross city -
The Ogasawara chain of islands is where you would need to go and then you can island hop to Minami Iwo Jima (South Sulfur Island is the translation). Good luck an good hunting.
